About Mickeys
Located in the heart of St. James, Mickeys Ice Cream Kitchen and Space is the soon-to-be legendary ice cream experience created in 2021. Almost 70 year ago, the Fleming family has called St. James home on the beautiful north shore of Long Island.
In 1951, Mickey (Thomas) and Kathleen Fleming had a simple plan for their growing family to head east to a small Long Island town with a train station. Leaving NYC behind and the home they created in the upper east side apartment to this small farm town.
Feeling blessed, Mickey and Kathy purchased a home at 243 Grant Avenue in town and squirreled another $500 to purchase adjoining Lincoln Avenue lot to enjoy all the country air and seasons had to offer.
Over the next several years, The Fleming family grew to include children of Michael, John, Gerard, Kathleen, Stephen, Maureen….along with several dogs, cats, and many others animals making this house a home.
Mickey and Kathy enjoyed this quiet town while Mickey retired from New York City Police Department in 1965 to enjoy more time with his young family in St. James. Eventually, Mickey became a new member of the village Police Department(s) within Head of the Harbor & Nissequogue.
In 1992, Mickey and Kathy are honored with being named the Grand Marshalls of the annual St. Patrick’s Day while all of their St. James friends and family waved them down Lake Avenue.
Sadly by the early 2000’s, Kathy and Mickey passed leaving behind their family legacy in St. James, Long Island, and far beyond Grant Ave. Today, the Fleming family continues with 6 children, 27 grandchildren & spouses, 22 great-grandchildren and growing…
